Interview with Ramon Alcaraz, CEO of JSL

We have created a solid foundation throughout this challenging year. We expanded our service portfolio with the acquisition of five companies and we have secure management that enabled us to respond to the growing demand of segments such as agribusiness, commodities, retail, automotive, and throughout the logistics chain (inbound, outbound, intralogistics, warehousing, distribution and e-commerce), among others. We recorded the best third quarter in the history of our company, with a net income of R$83 million, five times higher than the same period in 2020, and with 1.2 billion in new contracts. For the year 2022, our objective is to continue growing sustainably, favoring social inclusion, generating jobs and new opportunities for our employees and in the communities where we are present”.

Market in expansion

JSL has been transporting employees with bus and minibus charter for a few decades, and has seen, since the beginning of the pandemic, the growth of this type of service, with the need to keep distance between passengers. For 2022, expectations are positive.

JSL starts testing BYD electric bus

JSL has started a test period with electric bus from BYD, the second largest manufacturer of electric bus chassis in the world. The model chosen is the D9F, with a Marcopolo body, 12.9 meters long, with a range of approximately 250 km and full battery recharge in up to 4 hours.

The vehicle will be used to transport employees of charter service customers, on routes that cover the cities of Indaiatuba, Sorocaba and Suzano, in the countryside of São Paulo.

According to BYD, a bus that runs 72,000 km in a year can avoid, on average, the emission of 164 tons of CO² into the atmosphere in the same period. “Our intention is to progressively invest in a fleet powered by electricity, following our plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions”, explains Ramon Alcaraz, CEO of JSL. “We are committed to building a low carbon economy, which is also a goal of our customers”.

Instead of a train, a 47m-truck becomes a tailor-made solution for factory loads

São Paulo, 02/04/2022 – JSL, from the Simpar group, has just started a complex operation of “pentatrain” type trucks – which have five semi-trailers and are 47 meters long – at LD Celulose (a joint venture between the former Duratex and the Austrian Lenzing), in Indianópolis (MG). The carrier’s investment in the operation was R$50 million and, according to CEO Ramon Alcaraz, despite being highly specific, the project can be replicated in other sectors, but always under the “tailor-made” concept.

Due to its size, the pentatrain is not authorized to travel on public highways and, in the case of LD, it only travels along the internal roads of the industrial complex, transporting eucalyptus logs from the farms to the industrial park – an average of 28 kilometers per trip.” The pent-train has an obvious gain in volume and productivity, but it loses in speed and agility, so the customer needs to do the math and verify if it pays off”, explains the executive. “JSL has always grown into tailor-made and the pentatrain perfectly fits into that concept.” The contract for this type of operation is long-term, at least five years, says Alcaraz. At the end of the contracting period, it is possible to refurbish or even transform the vehicles if necessary.” The pentatrain is restricted to very specific conditions, but tests have already been carried out in the sugarcane sector. LD even came to us because of a project we did with Suzano a few years ago.” JSL has a team of trained and experienced drivers to drive the equipment, which requires a specially designed operation. The project foresees substantial productivity gains, which can reach up to 50% in the case of wood transportation. According to the carrier, with the pentatrain it is possible to reduce the number of annual trips by 5,600, with savings of up to 220 thousand liters of diesel in the period. Once the testing phase is over, JSL plans to operate 15 pentatrains on LD’s farms, which is implementing one of the largest dissolving pulp factories in the world, with a capacity of 500,000 tons per year.” In agribusiness or the wood sector, the greatest possible optimization of the operation is always sought and the most adequate transportation makes the company more or less competitive. Understanding to serve is much more than a pretty phrase, it’s building the best solution.”

JSL predicts new cost pressure this year, after soaring inflation in 2021

Carrier of the Simpar group seeks internal expense cuts, acquisitions and expansion into the international market

Inflation pressure on road freight transportation is expected to persist in 2022, albeit to a lesser extent, assesses Ramon Alcaraz, president of JSL, a company belonging to the Simpar group. The company, which last year multiplied its profit by 5.6 times, still sees plenty of room to cut internal costs and offset part of the high expenses. “There is a lot of tall grass to cut”, says the executive.

The skyrocketing price of various inputs in the sector, such as fuel (up 72% in the year), parts (31%) and tires (28%), led to an “absurd” situation, he says.

This scenario should not be repeated this year, he says. “We believe that inflation will still have a strong impact, but on a smaller scale. I also don’t believe that the rise in prices will be linked to the IPCA (inflation index), because there are external issues that don’t help, such as the price of oil, the dollar exchange rate. This year we have elections in Brazil, which can also have an impact. So it’s still going to be a tough year.”

Despite the increase in total costs — 44% in the year and 55% in the fourth quarter of 2021 — the company’s results were very positive. In the last quarter of the year, net income was R$ 54.3 million, an increase of 78.1%. Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) rose 81.9%, while gross revenue advanced 60.5%, to R$1.582 billion, compared to the same period in 2020.

Part of the good results is due to the acquisitions made throughout the year. However, even disregarding this effect, there would be an 18% increase in gross revenue in the fourth quarter. The improvement in numbers is due to a combination of factors, says Alcaraz: the good performance of the segments served by JSL (such as pulp, mining and retail); the cost reduction project; and readjustment negotiations carried out throughout the year. For 2022, the strategy adopted will be the same, according to him. “You can’t think we’re going to pass on 100% of inflation. Part of this has to be resolved by reducing costs. The company is still far from what we consider ideal, but we started well and that was reflected in the numbers.” One factor that benefited the company’s progress was the shortage of capacity in the logistics market. “This made companies look to JSL as a guarantee of demand”, he says. The situation also expanded dedicated operations, whose revenue rose 40% in the fourth quarter, year-on-year. In 2021, new contracts were signed in the amount of R$ 4.1 billion, with an average term of execution of 42 months. The company also plans to remain focused on making new acquisitions in the land cargo transportation market, a very fragmented segment. The difficult scenario for the cargo transportation sector – with inflation pressure and lack of capacity – favors negotiations with smaller groups, assesses the Executive. He points out, however, that the company focuses its interest on healthy companies. Another objective is to expand the internationalization of the group. In 2021, JSL, which already operates in five more countries in South America, in addition to Brazil, started an operation in South Africa. The entry took place through a dedicated operation in the retail sector, with a client with whom the company already worked in Brazil. The company’s idea is to use the experience to expand its presence in other international markets, according to the president.

Today, international operations represent approximately 4% of revenue. The goal is to expand this participation “significantly”, he says.

JSL invests heavily in driver training

JSL offers an extensive training program, which is given on a regular basis, to truck drivers who provide services for the company. This training program aims to increase the safety and well-being of workers.

This year alone, more than 360 drivers have already attended the classes, which cover topics such as standard safety procedures, defensive driving and include interventions by the partner Movimento Arte & Comunicação, which uses theatrical techniques to encourage safe behavior in a playful and fun way. The result is motivated and engaged professionals, always ready to improve in their role.

“JSL’s main asset is our people. The company, therefore, invests in training and safety at work, in order to offer quality and guarantee the well-being of all: employees, partners, customers and the community”, explains Mauro Gustavo, director of People and Culture

Lasting 4 hours, the training takes place in the auditoriums of Sest Senat (Social Transportation Service and National Transportation Learning Service) and covers the entire country. Since January, the training has already moved employees in Sorocaba (SP) and São Bernardo do Campo (SP), and in the coming weeks it will be in Piracicaba (SP) and Gravataí (RS).

Discover JSL's electric road bus

Founded in July 1956 by Portuguese immigrant Julio Simões, the carrier of the same name that later came to be called JSL, ended up acquiring its first truck and began transporting products to gardens, orchards and farms, on the way between Mogi das Cruzes to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro

In the 1970s, the company had a fleet of 42 trucks. But it was at the end of the 80’s that the Group began its diversification, starting to operate in the leasing of light vehicles and chartering for the transportation of passengers.

In 2020, the holding activity, which until then was carried out by JSL itself, started to be carried out by SIMPAR, and is currently the largest logistics services platform in Brazil.

The group also received a B- grade in the most recent report published by CDP, a non-profit organization that has the largest database on environmental actions promoted by companies around the world. JSL’s assessment is above the global average for both the intermodal transportation and logistics sector, which hold a C grade.

Speaking of sustainability, the company tested an electric bus. Via Trolebus spoke with Anderson Fontes from JSL, who explained how the company’s experience was in testing this type of vehicle in a mostly diesel-powered fleet.
